Visionary Voices
Maij Mai
Maij Vu Mai (pronounced like MAGE, pronouns they/he/sib/homie/fam) is a powerful Black Asian Trans Queer Neuroexpansive MaGe devoted to creating radical healing spaces where marginalized folks can tap into their own alchemical power and knowledge ecosystems. The energetically, flamboyant child of migrants, much of Maij’s upbringing was profoundly shaped by their experiences growing up in Charlotte, NC in a Roman Catholic-Buddhist, Black & Vietnamese household that did its very best to make meaning of the world in the U.S. South. Making duck music out of blades of grass, playing hand puppets with their siblings, & speaking to the ocean spirits of Myrtle Beach make up some of Maij’s fondest, childhood memories.
Their formal education includes a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and Women’s, Gender, Sexuality Studies and a Masters of Divinity from Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, NC. They are a proud alum of the Freedom Center's 2021 Trans Seminarian Cohort and currently serve as a higher education trickster and professional at PSR's Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion and Duke University's Center for Multicultural Affairs. With a combined 10+ years of experience co-creating magic in spiritual/religious/faith-based spaces, higher education institutions, and grassroots community organizing- Maij transforms every space they touch and creatively disarms systems of oppression with their non-binary wonder. As a being who exists and plays at the intersections of the Bipolar spectrum, ADHD, and OCD- Maij identifies themselves as an emotional alchemist and moodbender, and joyfully explores their body wisdom so that they can share that wisdom with others. They understand their existence as an ever shifting cauldron of power, agency, and meaning-making in a world that seeks to eliminate them.
Now a days, you can usually find Maij pacing, organizing, experimenting, contemplating, tasting, alchemizing, researching, writing, creating, communing, & BREATHING to the pace of their own spirit. They are juggling (in the most playful of ways) a million & one creative projects, hobbies, and fantasies all at once, hopping through different time loops & portals to make the impossible possible. They frequently talk to their ancestors, dream of their descendents, & engage in creative play with their present community. They are protecting their PEACE. at all costs- by any means necessary.
In order to really understand Maij, you’ll probably just have to meet them.
