    The Beginning

In 2001 Reverend Tonyia M. Rawls was commissioned to open the doors of Unity Fellowship Church Charlotte.  This was the first Unity Fellowship Church in the Bible Belt of the United States.  She quickly saw how vast the needs were among the poor, communities of color, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people and those with low literacy levels.  Those observations led to the establishment of a tutoring and career development program for urban high school students and later, the full launch of The Freedom Center For Social Justice (FCSJ).

   Mission & Goals

Our mission is to enhance quality of life by increasing the number of healthy options & opportunities available to low income communities, communities of color, sexual minorities and youth. Our goal is to counter the effects of poverty and all forms of oppression as they impact the lives of those on the margins of society.
